Match Preview :

The New Zealand All Blacks first played against Argentina (Los Pumas) on 30 October 1976, but New Zealand did not award test caps for the two internationals on that tour, nor for Argentina’s first internationals in New Zealand in 1979. The first Test match recognised as such by both teams was held on 26 October 1985, on a New Zealand tour of Argentina.

In full Tests the teams have met 20 times, with New Zealand winning 19 and one drawn. New Zealand also won all the four early matches where only Argentina awarded caps. They have only met twice at the Rugby World Cup, having been in the same pool at the inaugural tournament in 1987 and then again in 2011.

World number ones New Zealand will open their campaign for the title against South America´s premier team, Argentina. Taking place at the magnificent Wembley Stadium, 90,000 excited fans will be cheering on their favourites as they battle it out for an early lead in Pool C.

The current gap between them and second place is more than six ranking points, which is a gulf but then it always is. They are, according to their team-room whiteboard in 2013 – and who is to argue with that – “the most dominant team in the history of the world”.

When Argentina defeated France in the opening match of Rugby World Cup 2007, not only did it rock the proud home nation to its core, the ripple effect made the rest of the rugby world sit up and take note that Los Pumas were truly a team to be reckoned with.

Argentina have taken New Zealand on 21 times previously; never recording a victory (D1 L20). Argentina have lost six of their seven opening games at Rugby World Cups.
